Winthrop to host small business seminar

Winthrop University's Small Business Development Center will host a seminar titled "How to Start a Small Business" at 6 p.m. Monday at 210 Thurmond Hall on the Winthrop campus.

The free seminar is open to all entrepreneurs wishing to start a business. The program will provide basic information needed to start a small business, write a business plan and apply for financing.

IAAP annual meeting to be Tuesday in Rock Hill

The Rock Hill Area Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals will hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the School of the Deaf and the Blind, Midlands Outreach Center, 197 Piedmont Blvd., Suite 202, Rock Hill.

The meeting will include the installation of officers for 2008-2009 and the presentation of annual reports.

Entrepreneur Network legal panel discussion set

The Entrepreneur Network will continue its series of events aimed at helping small business owners and would-be entrepreneurs with a panel discussion of the legal issues surrounding starting and operating a business. The event will be held at the Baxter Hood Center on the campus of York Technical College beginning at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Participants will engage in networking activities and hear from a panel of local attorneys on various issues related to small businesses. Rock Hill tax attorney and Winthrop University professor Bob Breakfield will address tax issues. Don Harper of Harper & Rogers in Rock Hill will talk about the different ways of structuring a business, as well as licenses and permits. Alston DeVenny of Folks, Khoury & DeVenny in Lancaster will address premises liability, tort liability and insurance coverage. Attendees are encouraged to come prepared with questions.

Vogue Salon to host ribbon-cutting Tuesday

Vogue Salon & Spa will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for its new business location at 2460 India Hook Road, Suite 204, in Shiland Village. Grand opening festivities will be from 4 to 6 p.m.

The salon and spa, which has been opened for two months, provides tanning, pedicures, manicures and massages.

FTC opens formal probe of Intel's sales tactics

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Escalating the world's largest computer chip maker's legal woes, the Federal Trade Commission has opened a formal probe into Intel's sales tactics.

The move is a victory for its much smaller rival, Advanced Micro Devices.

Intel disclosed Friday that it has received a subpoena from the FTC for records about Intel's microprocessor sales, which dominate the world market with a roughly 80 percent share.

The FTC's two-year investigation had been considered "informal" until that point, and Intel, which is already fighting antitrust charges in the European Union and was fined this week by antitrust regulators in South Korea, said it had been cooperating.

Icahn recommends Yahoo set a $49.5B sale price

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hoping to negotiate a compromise, activist investor Carl Icahn urged Yahoo to declare it is willing to accept a takeover offer of $49.5 billion -- about $2 billion above Microsoft's last bid for the Internet pioneer.

Icahn recommended the price tag, which works out to $34.375 a share, in a letter he sent Friday to Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock.

It marks the first time that Icahn has publicly indicated what price he has in mind as he tries to force Yahoo's sale before the Sunnyvale-based company's annual meeting on Aug. 1.

If a deal isn't done before August, Icahn will try to replace Yahoo's board with a slate of his own directors and then fire company co-founder Jerry Yang as chief executive.
