Photographer captures Winthrop

The work of photographer Joel "Nick" Nichols will be on display at Winthrop University's Dacus Library during June. The exhibit of 15 photographs, which spans the decades from the 1960s to the present, includes campus scenes, students and theater productions. The exhibit is free and open to the public by appointment by calling 323-2131.

Nichols has been Winthrop University's photographer since 1962. A permanent display of his work is exhibited at Winthrop's Joynes Hall and at his alma mater, Erskine College.

Nichols is also a graduate of the U.S. Army photography school at Fort Monmouth, N.J., and is a third-generation photographer, learning skills from his father and grandfather, who were both professional photographers.

Nichols has received six honor awards from the University Photographers Association of America for excellence in university photography. His work has appeared in numerous magazines and scholarly journals.

Kim Grant exhibits art at York Tech library

The works of local artist Kim Grant are on display through June 27 at York Technical College's Anne Springs Close Library on the campus, 452 S. Anderson Road, Rock Hill.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. It can be viewed during library hours, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

Grant, a painter and potter, will discuss her work at 10:30 a.m. Friday in room L-113 of the library. Grant teaches art at Northwestern High School and has a B.A. in art education from Winthrop University.

The Library Club of York Technical College in conjunction with Arts4U2, the ongoing fine arts program, and English instructor Martha Macdonald are presenting the works.

Farmer's markets open in Rock Hill and York

These local farmer's markets are open:

n The York County Farmer's Market is open from 6:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at the intersection of Black Street and Elizabeth Lane in Rock Hill, across from Comporium Communications.

n The York Downtown Farmer's Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The market offers items such as local produce, homemade soaps, local honey, eggs, crafts, organic products, herbs and more. The market will open during Main Street Live! from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Customers are asked to bring their own bags or baskets. Vendor space is free, and the market is available during the week for any vendor that is interested in selling. n The Chester County Farmer's Market is open at 6 a.m. Saturdays in the lot behind the Market Building, 116 Columbia St., Chester. Those interested in selling items must have a permit. Computer classes offered by Panorama

Panorama Computer Learning, a nonprofit organization, offers the following classes:

n A Microsoft 3-in-1 computer class is offered at a 50 percent discount for people who are unemployed. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, 1300 River Run Court, Rock Hill, or June 25 at the Wingate Inn Hotel, 760 Galleria Blvd., Rock Hill. Students will learn to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint in a hands-on computer class. Dell notebook computers will be provided for classroom use. Cost is $25 for those that are unemployed and $50 for regular enrollment.

n A seminar on how to start and fund a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Staybridge Hotel, Arrowood Road, Charlotte, or from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn Express, Arrowood Road, Charlotte. Cost is $75 per person and includes workbook. The seminar explains how to start at nonprofit organization and how to fund it. Participants will complete hands-on exercises, IRS forms and a basic proposal.
