Activities will include hot-air balloon rides, face painting and a bounce house. Food will be provided by Lake Wylie Junction. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for the shelter.

House of Hope's women's shelter addresses the needs of homeless women and children in York County by providing emergency shelter, food, clothing, counseling and education.

Family day planned at Catawba Longhouse

A family fun day celebration will be from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Catawba Indian Longhouse, 996 Avenue of the Nations, Rock Hill. Activities will include water slides, inflatable jumpers, live music and a disc jockey.

Participants should bring a swimsuit, towels and sunscreen. Admission is free. Food and drinks will be sold. Information about recycling, emergency response and more will be onsite.

All proceeds will benefit future family-focused events. The event is sponsored by the Catawba Indian Nation Executive Committee, ISWA Development Corporation, the Catawba Cultural Center and CIN EPA Department.

Grants available through regional artist project

Visual artists and filmmakers living in York County are eligible to apply for grants of up to $5,000 through the Regional Artist Project Grant Program, managed by the Arts and Science Council.

The grants provide individuals with project support for the enhancement of artistic development. Grant awards may be used for projects such as attendance at workshops or master classes or the purchase of supplies and materials needed to create new work.

Free grant information sessions will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 22 at the Charlotte Museum of History, 3500 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, and 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 24 at the Arts Council of York County, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill.

Applications and guidelines are available online at www.artsandscience.org. The deadline is Aug. 27.

Artists must have lived in York County for one year. Residents living for at least one year in the North Carolina counties of Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford and Stanly also are eligible to apply.

Rock Hill Rubies shop to be open on July 12

The Rock Hill Rubies will have its second annual Swap and Shop from 8 a.m. to noon July 12 at the home of Annette Greene. The shop is open to the public.

It will include only Red Hat merchandise, such as items in the colors of red, purple, pink and lavender, and products such as hats and earrings. Display tables are available to rent by calling Greene at 366-9612. Breakfast and brunch will be sold.

Arts council events include photo, exhibits

The Arts Council of York County will have the following events:

• Ray Clemmer photography exhibit, through July 30 in the Perimeter Gallery at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Clemmer, a Kings Mountain native, uses a technique that combines film and digital technologies resulting in dramatic computer enhanced photography. The exhibit features photographs taken at Crowders Mountain in Gaston County. The exhibit is free. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second and fourth Saturday of each month; and 2 to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Sunday of each month.

• Jackie Clarkin exhibition, on display through July 31 in the City Hall Rotunda Gallery, 155 Johnson St., Rock Hill. The exhibit features paintings of angels in bright, vivid colors. Clarkin, a Clover artist, uses a mosaic stained-glass effect and the use of orbs to show energy flow on canvas. The exhibit is free. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

• Andie Steele exhibition, on display Monday through Aug. 10 at the Dalton Gallery at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill. The exhibit uses pink and red monofilament installations to divide rooms and form new areas within established spaces. Steele resides in Wilmington, N.C., and is an assistant professor of sculpture at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The opening reception will be 6 p.m. July 17. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second and fourth Saturday of each month; and 2 to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Sunday of each month.
