McBEE — Indian Land coach Mike Mayer’s mother had a stroke this week, and his team, especially the Warriors’ defense, played inspired football for him.

The Warriors’ defense made two crucial stands against the McBee Panthers at the end of the fourth quarter to seal a 14-6 Region 3-A victory Friday.

Early in the game, especially on its second drive, McBee used its wishbone attack to grind out yards on the ground. Greg McDonald capped off the Panthers’ best drive with a 17-yard run to make it 6-0.

The Warriors’ next drive featured Carl Watson, who picked up 49 yards rushing on five carries. Watson had a 2-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion to make it 8-6 Indian Land at the half.

After McBee’s initial drive of the second half ended with a punt, Indian Land almost fumbled the punt right back to the Panthers. The Warriors were able to overcome the mistake and put together a 13-play, 75-yard drive that lasted eight minutes. Chad Carlton’s 8-yard run made it 14-6, but the real hero of the drive was Ted Boston. Boston had two runs that converted fourth downs, including a 5-yard run on a fake punt.

McBee had two chances to try and tie the score at the end of the fourth quarter. The Warriors’ defense stopped them twice on fourth down inside the 20, once on downs and the second on a Justin Gordon’s interception.

“They (Indian Land ) came to play,” said interim Indian Land coach David Sweem, who filled in for Mayer. “We played real physical and played as a team.

“The fake punt was especially big as it ate up more of the clock.”

It was a big win for the Warriors, but the coaches and players had Mayer on their minds.

“The kids played hard for Mike; he is in our prayers,” Sweem said.
