Caitlyn Norris, 9, and Megan Sutphin, 11, are good role models for others their age -- and those of us a whole lot older, too. With fast thinking and calm courage, the two girls alerted sleeping grownups to a fire about to consume their home and helped lead the way out.

Megan was at Caitlyn's home near York for a sleepover Saturday when the girls awoke early in the morning to the sound of breaking glass and the overwhelming smell of smoke. They screamed and woke Caitlyn's parents, and then used what they had learned at school about fire safety to get out of the home safely.

Among other things, the girls checked the temperature of a door before barging through. Fire safety experts warn that a hot door can mean fire on the other side, so leave the door closed and find another way out.

We are sorry about the total loss of the Norris home and all the family's possessions. But we are grateful that they are safe and uninjured.

This incident offers a good object lesson for families. Take the time to learn the right way to get out of a burning home and make sure everyone in the family knows the best escape routes. A little planning could save lives.

Parents also might want to ask their children to share what they'd learned in school about fire safety. In many cases, we'd bet, the kids will know more than their parents.
